7 Best Used Cars to Export from China to Africa in 2026

Real data from 400+ shipped cars: the models that actually sell fastest in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya — and the ones gathering dust on your lot.

7 Best Used Cars to Export from China to Africa in 2026

A guy emailed me last week: "I have $15,000 ready. What car should I buy?"

Wrong question. The right question is: what car will sell fastest when it hits your lot.

I've shipped over 400 cars from Tianjin, Guangzhou, and Shanghai into Lagos, Tema, and Mombasa. Here's what's actually moving in 2026 — and what's gathering dust.

Toyota Corolla (2018-2022)

$5,500-8,500 in China. Healthy margins on resale — varies by market condition.

Still the king, and it's not close. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya — every mechanic in every roadside workshop can fix a Corolla blindfolded. Parts are everywhere. Here's the thing: stick to the 1.6L petrol. I've seen importers get burned on the hybrids — yes, they sip fuel, but when that battery goes in Lagos traffic, your buyer is calling you at 6am.

Nissan Sunny/Sylphy (2019-2023)

$4,800-7,500. Solid margins — competitive but profitable.

This is your ride-hailing workhorse. Uber and Bolt drivers in West Africa and Egypt love these. Comfortable cabin, low fuel consumption. Get the CVT automatic — it sells significantly faster than manual. I moved 12 Sylphys to Accra last quarter and they were gone in 11 days.

Honda Fit/Jazz (2018-2022)

$5,000-7,800. Strong margins — high demand makes it worthwhile.

Tiny on the outside, deceptively roomy inside. East Africa can't get enough — Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda. Right-hand drive units imported from Korea into China are the secret weapon here. If you can source RHD Fits, you're printing money. Your competition is probably still shipping LHD.

Great Wall Pickup (2020-2024)

$7,000-12,000. Premium margins — but capital-intensive.

Here's one that surprises people. These things are tanks. Construction sites, farms, mining roads — Nigeria, Ghana, Angola. Diesel variants only. I know a buyer in Onitsha who rotates through 3 of these a year because demand for used pickups in the agricultural belt is relentless. Margins are attractive because supply is scarce.

BYD E6 / Aion S (2020-2023)

$8,000-15,000. Reasonable margins for the right buyer.

Zero fuel cost is a real selling point — but only in markets with reliable charging. Kenya (Nairobi), Rwanda, and South Africa are the plays right now. Trust me on this: demand 80%+ SOH on the battery or walk away. A degraded EV battery makes the car unsellable. This segment is growing but it's not yet the Corolla-level safe bet.

Hyundai Tucson/ix35 (2018-2021)

$8,000-14,000. Decent margins in markets with EV adoption.

SUV appetite across Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana is insatiable right now. The 2.0L petrol is what buyers want. These sit higher than sedans — on roads that flood or crumble, that matters. A lot.

Suzuki Swift (2017-2021)

$3,500-6,000. Good margins — regional niche, less competition.

The entry-level play. East Africa and Francophone Africa snap these up. Low entry price for your buyer means faster turnover for you. Get the automatic — it commands a premium.

Before You Wire Any Money

Check Jiji, Tonaton, and local Facebook Marketplace groups. What's listed? More importantly — what's listed and marked "SOLD" within a week? That's your actual demand signal.

Several African countries now ban imports of cars older than 7-10 years. Verify the age restriction for your destination before you bid.

Calculate full landed cost — freight, insurance, port charges, clearing agent fees, and the "informal" costs that don't appear on any receipt. If the math doesn't work, walk.

Start with 1-2 units. I've watched too many first-timers go big on six cars and learn their lesson with their life savings.

Payment: 30/70 T/T split is standard. 30% down, 70% after pre-shipment photos and video verification. Three or more cars in a batch, go RoRo — it's cheaper. Get your SONCAP or PVOC certificate sorted before the car hits the port, because demurrage charges are a slow death.

The best car to export isn't the cheapest one in China. It's the one your customer will pay for fastest.
